The Vista Counseling Services Program is located in the heart of Salt Lake City, Utah, nestled at the foot of the beautiful Wasatch Mountain Range. The hustle and bustle of the city, combined with the university campus and our mountain setting, give this location great diversity for our students. Minutes away are the Wasatch Mountains, which hold the "Greatest Snow on Earth." Brighton, Snowbird and Alta (not to mention Park City) ski resorts are all wonderful attractions year round. As the host of the 2002 Olympics, Salt Lake City has extended its hand to the country and the world as a thriving multi-cultural city.
The Transitional Living arrangement comes in three four-plex style settings, the apartments are not co-ed as one unit is for the female student and the other two are for the male students. Each apartment complex comes equipped with a security alarm system and all VCS buildings are further protected by Peak Alarm Company. Peak Alarm officers monitor each apartment from the hours of 12 o'clock midnight through 8 o'clock am. Four blocks from the University of Utah, and minutes away from Westminster and Salt Lake Community College, students will find city travel a breeze. Historical museums, shopping centers, and restaurants of all nationalities fill the city for the student to explore and enjoy.
This setting provides a true student experience within the city, yet in a safe and comfortable environment. Each student's experience can be individualized to meet his or her specific needs, but will take the form of a family model unit which will fulfill a valuable need for the student to thrive. This model will allow for shared experiences, connections, and a sense of belonging during this critical time in their lives. As success and failure come their way, the knowledge that home is not far away can reassure even the most fragile of students. This is a home that will support yet challenge them; that will promote healthy choices yet process choices that didn't work; and a home that will love them dearly yet be firm in holding to the values it holds true.
Perfection cannot be expected. It doesn't exist. Instead, we only hope that with failure comes understanding and determination to improve on a daily basis. It is our belief that with the right support, the right opportunities, and the right environment, our students can start to feel great satisfaction in the small steps that lead them to healthy, happy relationships with themselves, their families, and their friends. These steps can further assist them in building upon the strong foundation established during this most difficult time in their lives.
